Rope Chain vs Franco Chain: Same Width, Very Different Chain

At essentially the same width, a Franco holds about 50% more silver than a rope chain. Our 50 cm Franco at 4,7 mm weighs 55 g; our 50 cm rope at 4,6 mm weighs 36 g. Franco is the dense, discreet one. Rope is the one that moves and catches light.

These two get compared less often than the Cuban and curb pairing, which is odd, because they are the more genuinely different choice. A Cuban and a curb are variations on one idea. A Franco and a rope are two entirely different ways of making a chain.

How each one is built

A Franco is made from V-shaped links that slot into one another to form a square profile with four flat faces. The construction is extremely dense — there is very little air anywhere in the chain — and the flat faces give it a smooth, almost machined surface rather than an obviously linked one.

A rope is built from strands twisted around each other in a spiral, the way a physical rope is laid. That produces a faceted surface: dozens of small angled planes that pick up light from different directions as you move. It also has more give, so a rope drapes where a Franco sits.

The weights, which settle most of it

All figures are solid 925 at 50 cm, so they compare directly.

Style Width Weight
Franco 3,8 mm 36 g
Rope 4,6 mm 36 g
Rope 5,7 mm 48 g
Franco 4,7 mm 55 g
Rope 6,8 mm 87 g
Rope 7,6 mm 104 g

* Weights are approximate and may vary slightly due to production processes.

Two things fall out of that table.

Franco at 4,7 mm outweighs rope at 5,7 mm. A full millimetre narrower, and still 7 g heavier. If what you want is metal rather than visible width, Franco delivers it in a smaller package than anything else we offer.

Franco at 3,8 mm weighs the same as rope at 4,6 mm. Identical substance, but the Franco is visibly narrower on the neck. Same weight, different presence.

How they wear

Franco sits. The square profile lies flat and the links are locked closely enough that the chain holds its line rather than pooling. Its flat faces catch light in planes — bright from some angles, quiet from others — which is why a Franco can look like a solid bar at a distance and reveal its structure up close.

Rope drapes. The spiral construction has more give, so it follows the body more loosely. And because its surface is faceted rather than flat, it throws light continuously as you move — it is the more visually active of the two in ordinary daylight, at any width.

What each range covers

We offer Franco at 3,8 and 4,7 mm, as a necklace. Both sit in the range where the construction does what it is best at: a lot of silver in a chain that stays narrow and lies flat.

We offer rope from 4,6 to 7,6 mm, as a necklace and as a bracelet in 19 and 22 cm — which of those two lengths to take is covered in our bracelet sizing guide. At 4,6 mm it is a fine everyday chain; at 7,6 mm and 104 g it has real presence while keeping the softer, faceted surface.

So above 4,7 mm, rope is currently the only one of the two we offer.

All our chains are unisex, and width is what decides how one reads — not who is wearing it. The same silver Franco necklace at 4,7 mm is a fine chain on a woman and a fine chain on a man; what changes the impression is width and length. At 3,8 and 4,6 mm these sit close to the skin, work with an open neckline as easily as under a collar, and carry a pendant without competing with it. From 6,8 mm up the rope stops being something you forget you have on. That is a decision about how visible you want the chain to be, and it is the only decision here.

Which to choose

  • Most silver in the least width: Franco. Nothing else in our range packs metal like it.
  • Something that stays under a collar: Franco at 3,8 mm.
  • Movement and light rather than mass: Rope.
  • A chain wider than 4,7 mm: Rope — of these two, it is the one we offer above that width.
  • A matching bracelet: Rope. Franco is necklace-only.

Both are solid 925, made in Italy, and available in 50, 55 and 60 cm. Every width in both ranges is shown to scale in our chain thickness guide, and if the chain you are weighing the Franco against is a Cuban rather than a rope, that is Franco vs Cuban link.

Pogosta vprašanja

What is the difference between a rope chain and a Franco chain?

A Franco is built from V-shaped links that slot together into a square profile with four flat faces, making it very dense. A rope is built from strands twisted into a spiral, giving it a faceted surface and more drape. At the same width, a Franco contains substantially more silver.

Which is heavier, a rope or a Franco chain?

A Franco, at any comparable width. Our 50 cm Franco at 4,7 mm is 55 g while our 50 cm rope at 4,6 mm is 36 g — around 50% more silver. The Franco at 4,7 mm even outweighs the rope at 5,7 mm.

Which is stronger, a rope or a Franco chain?

In solid sterling silver, strength follows the amount of metal, so a Franco is more resistant than a rope of the same width. Compare gram weights rather than link style when strength matters to you.

Is a Franco chain good for everyday wear?

Yes. At 3,8 mm it is substantial by weight while staying narrow enough to sit under a collar unnoticed, which is the combination most people want from a chain they never take off.

Is a Franco necklace for women or for men?

Both — ours are unisex, like every chain we offer. A silver Franco necklace at 3,8 or 4,7 mm sits in the width range that reads as fine jewellery on anyone. What a Franco is good at — holding a lot of silver in a narrow, flat-sided chain that lies close to the skin — has nothing to do with who is wearing it. Width and length decide how a chain reads, not the wearer, and both widths come in 50, 55 and 60 cm.

Do you offer a Franco bracelet?

Not currently — Franco is necklace-only in our range. Rope, curb and Cuban link are all available as bracelets in 19 and 22 cm.

Which catches the light more, rope or Franco?

Rope. Its twisted construction creates many small angled facets that reflect from different directions as you move. A Franco's flat faces reflect in planes instead — brighter from some angles, quieter from others.
